NATALIA TORRES NEGREIRA

NATALIA TORRES NEGREIRA was born in Australia to Uruguayan parents.

Her ceramics practice is informed by her South American heritage as well as the Bundjalung country she resides on.

Natalia was introduced to ceramics through the sculptural works of her South American mother and aunty.

This maternal lineage lay dormant and unexplored for many years before emerging as a central part of her life and work.

Her practice began when she attended a series of short ceramics courses in 2017. Since then Natalia has completed both a Diploma in Visual Arts and a Diploma in Ceramics.

These studies enabled her to hone her technical skills and develop expertise in clay construction and surfacing.

Natalia’s South American heritage is embedded in her works through the application of bright colours, contrasting textures and the effects of subtle lighting.

Natalia has participated annually in The Australian Ceramics Open Studios and the North Coast Mudtrail for the last 5 years. She also operates Ruby and Frank studio and her online store from the Northern Rivers.

In Bundjalung country, where Natalia lives, the effects of climate change have become more apparent and her ideas have evolved to encompass the impacts of recent flood events on the local community.
